The updated version of the Assassination of God's Character Vol 1 is now available for free download from our website:
http://themeofthebible.com/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=cat2;tpstart=10
Short description of the file:
Does God originate destruction? Were there times when God struck sinners dead or sent destructive plagues? Did God order the Israelites to commit genocide against the Canaanite tribes -i.e. to kill all the men, women, children and infants (but permitted young virgins to live)? If so, how do you relate to that aspect of God's character? The Assassination of God's Character (Volumes 1 & 2), investigates whether God was really involved in these atrocities or whether human beings have been actively persuaded to believe these things as part of a most dangerous - almost perfect- deception. Recent research proves that normal people can be persuaded to voluntarily commit atrocities against others, (against their own conscience) if they believe the command to do so originates from an authority-figure. e.g. Milgram experiment, Stanford Prison experiment. Was this how the ancient Israelites were persuaded to justify killing the pagan Canaanites? Did those in authority convince the Israelites that by committing genocide - killing men, women and children - that they were simply following God's orders - and that they were thus committing not atrocities, but holy, sanctified actions? Volume 1 discusses and compares the two basic but opposing principle operating in the world today: the spirit of love and the spirit of selfishness. Volume 2 answers specific objections concerning violent events outlined in the Bible; events which are thought to have been commanded or inflicted by God - which have arisen in the study and discussion on this important subject.

The Reason Why Satan Attacks God's Law

Author:
Last Updated: This article presents why Satan is so urgently attacking God's law and how the devil has managed to succeed in deceiving so many Christians about the importance of the law of God. God is love. ie. His character is loving. God's law is a transcript of His loving character, but Satan is attempting to paint God's character as evil. He is doing this by twisting the truth about the law of God. Satan wants God's law of love to be seen, not as a protective shield, but as an object of fear and as a burden.

Last Updated: Jesus said that Satan was a liar and murderer from the beginning (John 8:44). Isn't it strange then, that we see page after page in the Bible of stories where it is said that "God" commanded murders, venegful killings, human sacrifices, deaths to appease him... This article attempts to identify the being behind the killings and to reveal the character of the 'god' who is enjoying the genocides.

Questions for Objectors on the Character of God

Author: Sherlene Turner
Last Updated: This article contains questions about God's character - many of which are often not considered when people study the Bible. These questions are not intended as a challenge or for a platform of debate among theologians. They are intended to prompt those who are seeking to know God better, to study for themselves and to permit them to draw closer to our loving Father by refocusing on and seeing a clearer vision of His love.

Whipping Boy

The Bible states that God 'was wrath' toward sinners because of disobedience and that punishment was unavoidable.  Some theologians believe that God  needed to vent/satisfy His 'wrath' over sin by placing the debt of punishment on His Son Jesus.  Some believe God insisted that Christ be crucified on the cross in order to satiate divine wrath.  But is this a correct concept? This article explores  the real sacrifice that both the Father and the Son made to redeem humankind. Did God need a whipping boy?

   Abraham and Child Sacrifice

Last Updated: The Bible portrays the story of Abraham and his son Isaac - a pre-dawn trip up a holy mountain, into the high places, to offer a child as a burnt offering to the gods.... God had instructed Abraham to separate himself from the pagan worshippers in his home town of Ur - to come out and be separate from them - so what is the explanation of the command by God for Abraham to perform a human child sacrifice, on a high place, at sunrise - in a manner exactly like that required of the Canaanites by their pagan gods? What was really behind this amazing story and what vital gospel message was God trying to teach us through Abraham and Isaac's experience?

Last Updated: The Bible seems quite clear in its assertions that on various occasions, God required certain sinners to be stoned for committing various sins e.g. adultery, Sabbath-breaking, laziness, drunkedness, murder. However, how does this position relate to the concept of God being the Life-giving Creator and a Being whose love never ends? In this article, these Scriptures are studied in the light of Jesus' own testimony.

Did God Command and Ordain Rape?

Author:
Last Updated: Early in the Bible, God made His laws known that the Israelites were not to intermarry with the pagan nations. Only four chapters later, that law is reversed. Furthermore, there are several instances in the Bible where it is stated that God legitimised (legalised) the Israelites to use force to secure these captive, pagan virgins as 'wives.' These young girls witnessed the Israelites' brutal slaughter of their families - including their infant brothers after which they were then selected by the Israelite warriors as de facto 'brides.' A one month mourning period was permitted for the girls to grieve the loss of their families before they were forcibly married (i.e. raped). After they had been 'pierced' (literal translation) or 'humbled' (as the King James Version refers to the rape), the Israelite warriors could abandon the rape victims 'legally' under the 'divinely originated' law.' Young war and rape victims, suffering post-traumatic stress disorder, possibly pregnant/infected with venereal diseases, with no existing home or surviving relatives, wandering through a strange land, without any means of support, unable to speak the Israelite language, at the 'mercy' of lustful men.... what a future faced them and what a shocking witness against the God of love! This article examines whether God did actually command and sanction rape in the Bible and the reasons behind this strange law in Deut 21 and Numbers 31.

   Amoral God

Author:
Last Updated: Is God amoral - ie. without any morals at all? Does God change His divine law according to time and circumstances, in regard to a 'special' people or is God's law unchanging and immutable? It is a principle of the Seventh-day Adventist faith that God's law is unchangeable, so why does it seem that there are instances in the Bible when God failed to punish those who transgressed His law and even commanded certain people to break His law? eg ordering the Israelites to commit genocide upon the Canaanites; ordering Moses to kill the man who broke the Sabbath, but not ordering the death of Moses for killing the Egyptian; was didn't God require the death of David for killing Uriah and committing adultery with Bathsheba? Why weren't the punishments proportionate to their crimes? Did God put the law aside when He so desired? Can God change the rules at whim?

Early SDA Sermons on God's Character (1897)

Author: Pastor George E Fifield
Last Updated: This is a powerful sermon given by Pastor George E Fifield on the character of God. While Ellen White was not present at the camp meeting to hear Pastor Fifield's sermons, she was given messages from God to present to the ministers who were to deliver the sermons. Pastor Fifield received no corrective messages from Ellen White for his presentations - in fact, it was noted in the SDA church's official publications, that the particular camp- meeting was the most blessed event and that there was present an unusually peaceful spirit of brotherly love. Elders Jones and Waggoner also preached, but Pastor George Fifield attracted the most people at his presentations. Ellen White's son Wille was present also. This article reveals that the SDA pioneers were indeed given the truth about God's character being non-destructive.
