QUEENSLANDERS FOR SAFE WATER (AIR AND FOOD) Inc NEWS Feb 18th 2009
Dear Members and supporters
RALLY – It was a good Rally last week at Parliament House , with about 200 people attending, according to the one sentence in the Courier Mail that they gave us - as usual for very pro-fluoride Courier Mail The banners and posters were eye-catching and the mood very positive that we can make a difference. Donations were also collected for the Victorian Bush fire tragedy with $624.50 passed on via the Commonwealth Bank.
Many thanks to the Rally speakers, they were all really great. We especially thank the following -
MP Dorothy Pratt , Member for Nanango, who spoke of freedom of choice, the $200, 000 that was given to the Qld Dental Assn by the Qld Health Minister to promote fluoridation and collect signatures on a petition ( Dorothy stated the govt considers this a mandate) and how the volume of emails that had been sent early in 2008 opposing fluoridation, caused major problems with the government computers, ending up with having the emails blocked from reaching the MPs
Dr John Ryan, a medical Dr (with an alphabet of qualifications after his name), who spoke on the harm that fluoridation can cause, the evidence of this that has been given to the Bligh govt and how this has been ignored.
Dr Heather Way, a Cancer Researcher for 20 years who has specialised in molecular physiology and is the spokesperson for the worldwide body “Cancer Prevention Coalition” who spoke on association with fluoridation and cancer.
Brian McDermott from the Peoples Class Action Trust, who spoke on the first stages of an intended class action on water fluoridation and recycled water.
Theo Tholen, who chose to come and live in Australia for freedom after being a Japanese Prisoner of War in WW 2, who spoke on Freedom of Choice. Theo helped end fluoridation on the Gold Coast 30 years ago ( as did our wonderful MC Colin) and now at the age of 79 is taking up the fight again.
CAIRNS MEETING THURSDAY NIGHT 19th Feb 7pm( Cairns RSL club ) - for those concerned about forced fluoridation in the far north, there is to be a public meeting protesting forced fluoridation on Thursday night 19th Feb , 7pm start, at the Cairns RSL. The FNQ branch of Queenslanders Against Water Fluoridation plan to campaign until fluoridation is banned in Queensland ( just as fluoridation has been banned in the vast majority of countries in the world.)
On the 11th December 2008, Cr. Di Forsyth presented a motion to the Cairns Regional Council calling on the Queensland Premier to stop the mandation of water fluoridation in the Cairns region. This was seconded by Cr. Linda Cooper and carried by the Council and sent to the government. Cairns Council is continuing to resist forced fluoridation without consultation.
REDLANDS ACTIVITIES Redlands is slated to be fluoridated in late 2009 ( Redlands get their water from the Leslie Harrison dam and from Stradbroke Island, not from Mr Crosby )
A wonderful gent Bill Snoddy from Cleveland , 71 years young, is leading the charge for FREEDOM OF CHOICE in Redlands, free fluoride tablets for those who want to consume fluoride and fluoride free water for those who don’t. Bill has made up sandwich boards and stands in the business areas of Cleveland collecting Petition signatures to go to Redlands Council.
Bill reports that he just stands there and people come up to him and sign. Bill is doing a great job, has some keen helpers but would like more . If anyone near Cleveland could help Bill, please phone him on 07 38212348
STATE ELECTION ANNOUNCEMENT IMMINENT As many of those at the Rally last week , or at the Public meeting in West End in November would know, as a vehicle to get the message out that fluoride harms people and that recycled water should be used by Industry , I have signaled that I intend to run as an Independent candidate in South Brisbane, Anna Bligh’s electorate. As those who know me well, I will do anything I can to stop fluoride harming people. I have already been offered assistance by some wonderful people but as it is a very difficult job I would appreciate any assistance in any form with delivering flyers , Poll booth assistance etc. Please contact me on email
vote1@merilynhaines.org
or phone 0403029077 if you can offer help. We know of intending candidates in other areas who are also campaigning for safe water and freedom from forced fluoridation .
Many thanks to those who attended the Rally, we appreciate in these economic times, it is very difficult to do, getting time off work on a week day and with travel costs ,parking costs etc.
Best wishes

Not only are we in trouble with the poisons in our water but what about the rubbish from China on clothing, leather goods, blankets etc, etc, here are some articles on some of the problems, shudder!!!. I guess you start with your local member, cross your fingers first, we can only try.
We have received some interesting emails in response to our newsletter about poisonous Chinese cottons. As an example, read what Anne Hills had to say about her experience with cotton undies from Best and Less. This fits right in with the terrible hives I got from a Best and Less nightie. (Click here to read my story.)
Hi, I've just read the article about formaldehyde in clothing and I'm fuming! About 6 months ago I purchased several pairs of cotton undies from Best and Less. They were cheap but very comfortable. I always wash all new clothing separately and hang everything in the sun to dry. At some stage after wearing the new clothing, I developed a rash in the "Ladies Department". Since I've always been prone to Candida, I assumed it was a flare up and treated it as usual. However, this is not internal thrush, but external and so extremely itchy that I sometimes feel I'll go mad. I've tried so many creams and anti-fungals that the bathroom looks like a chemist shop! It became so raw and painful that I finally saw a Dr. who wanted to give me hormone cream. I left there in desperation. I don't want to use some synthetic cream and risk an even worse problem.
After reading the article about the chemicals in clothing, the light bulb went on! I checked, and sure enough, every pair of undies says, you've guessed it! "Made in China" I feel sick that this has been going on for nearly 6 months. The undies must have each been washed dozens of times but the rash persists. No prizes for guessing where the undies ended up but it's hard to find anything now that does not come from China. Even though I have stopped wearing the offending articles, I'm still having problems and I wonder how long it will take to leave my body.
Thank you for writing the article, I hope my story will help someone else.

Poison blanket recall
Chinese-made blankets found to contain high levels of formaldehyde have been recalled across Australia and New Zealand, the distributor said today, amid rising global concerns about the safety of Chinese products.
The voluntary recall by Australian-based Charles Parsons came two days after the New Zealand government launched an urgent investigation after scientists found dangerous levels of formaldehyde in woolen and cotton clothes made in China.
A range of Chinese exports - from pet food ingredients to toothpaste - have come under international scrutiny in recent months.
Toy company Mattel Inc recently issued two recalls of Chinese-made toys, including some distributed in Australia, due to lead-tainted paint and tiny magnets that could be swallowed by children.
Formaldehyde - a chemical preservative that gives a permanent press effect to clothes and is also used as an embalming fluid - can cause problems ranging from skin rashes to cancer.
Charles Parsons decline to release the total number of blankets involved, but spokesman Mark Bilton said "there's a lot" in Australia and about 800 in New Zealand.
Tests had shown the formaldehyde level in the "Superlux" label blankets was "above the European and US standards. There are no standards in Australia and New Zealand so it's a voluntary recall," he said.
Independent tests had revealed the chemical's content was "less" that 1500 parts per million - the maximum level permitted in Germany - but "we've decided not to get into those details," Bilton said.
An official at China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, a quality watchdog, said the case was under investigation.
Meanwhile, New Zealand government research agency AgResearch said it was swamped by clothing companies wanting tests on Chinese imports.
Scientists testing clothes for TV3's "Target" consumer watchdog program discovered formaldehyde concentrations up to 900 times above the safe level.
Many companies had complained that they had no information about what constitutes safe levels of formaldehyde, said Lorraine Greer, AgResearch's textiles division testing laboratory manager.
The New Zealand Ministry of Consumer Affairs today said it would start a program to test for formaldehyde in clothes next week as part of its probe, while acknowledging the country had no standard for formaldehyde levels in textiles - a concern of retailers.
At least 100 items of children's and adults' clothing and babywear imported from a range of countries would be included in the testing, Ministry General Manager Liz MacPherson said.
"As part of the investigation, New Zealand will look at standards and testing regimes overseas," she said.
"Neither New Zealand or Australia currently has a standard for formaldehyde levels in textiles."
The blanket recall comes after New Zealand cut-price retailer The Warehouse issued a recall of children's pajamas made in China last weekend after two children were burned when their flannelette pajamas caught fire.

Chinese Products
by Elaine Hollingsworth
Thanks to former President Bill Clinton, Chinese products have flooded the world. Why did he push this so hard? If he was trying to wreck our health, he has done a bang-up job of it. There have been so many poisonous products coming out of China (Melamine-contaminated milk being just the tip of the iceberg) that I don’t know where to start.
Small example -- Australian chain store, Best and Less, had cosy flannel nities in lovely pastel colours, full length, roomy, and apparently drenched in poisons. I bought four of them and was rewarded by a nasty case of hives.
All it took was an hour in one of those nities for my body to break out in hives, and I itched for days after. As an experiment we soaked the nities in one strong solution after the other, but when I tried again, they still made me itch. My phoned complaint was met by apathy, which wasn’t surprising.
Experts on their methods have told me that Chinese cotton is of such poor quality that they permeate it with formaldehyde to give it body. Terrific, but only if you are dead and want to be embalmed. Of course, not everyone is as fortunate as I -- my body is sensitive, and warns me quickly when I’m attacked. Most won’t notice an immediate reaction, but don’t be smug if you can wear Chinese cotton without repercussions. Problems can surface later, rather than immediately: unexplained, serious skin diseases, or even cancer can strike after years of exposure. And just imagine the damage formaldehyde is doing to our children!
Best and Less would probably go out of business if they quit buying Chinese products, and they are not alone. Rivers, once a store we respected, carries cotton t-shirts that caused me immediate itching when I wore them.
I’m running out of old, pre-Chinese cotton and can’t find substitutes, at any price. Please email us if you know ethical firms that sell safe cottons. And complain! It’s the only way we can effect change. Women in the US are fighting back with a class action against Victoria’s Secret because formaldehyde in their products caused “itching, welts and blisters.”
I hope they get a substantial settlement, and frighten stores into demanding safe products.
EU to ban chemical used in Chinese leather goods
BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) — The European Union says it will ban a chemical used in Chinese leather shoes and sofas that can cause severe allergic reactions.
Dimethyl fumarate, or DMF, prevents mold growing on leather goods produced in humid climates.
But customers in France, Britain, Finland and Sweden have complained that it causes skin rashes and breathing problems.
The chemical is already outlawed on goods produced within Europe, but that ban will now extend to imports — and will largely affect goods from China.
EU spokeswoman Helen Kearns said Thursday the ban must be approved by the European Parliament and the European Commission, and it go into force within two months.
