Maranatha Orphanage - Gucca near Kisii in West Kenya

Following the visit the sewing class has since been able to make four protective clothing suits from sugar sacks using the step by step photographs from Pam Gregory. About 5 litres of honey from three hives was harvested in April. Two older boys were given hives as an opportunity to help themselves when they left the orphanage as 18 year olds and went to work on a tea farm

A brief catch up visit was made in September 2008 when we gave them further beekeeping books followed by a group question time with John Home the project leader. At the conclusion of which he heard about the pleasing progress that they now have made with some 15-20 hives of bees situated in three apiaries. These hives have yielded respectable crops of honey which has been a great encouragement to them and to us at Bees Abroad.

This has been an unusual value for money project in that Sherlene Turner from Australia who is financially supporting the general work of this orphanage allocated just £500 to set the beekeeping up and going with the help of Bees Abroad.

Our project in Kisii, is managed and supported by John and Mary Home.
